In a bold move to elevate Maharashtra’s infrastructure and logistics capabilities, the state has officially kick-started the pre-feasibility study for the Greenfield Vadhavan Airport project. Spearheaded by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), this ambitious initiative aims to establish Mumbai’s third major airport, complementing the existing Mumbai International Airport and the under-construction Navi Mumbai Airport.
Situated near the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar, the new airport is being developed as a part of a larger multimodal transport ecosystem. The airport will serve as a vital link connecting air, sea, rail, and road transport to streamline cargo movement and enhance regional accessibility.
To ensure comprehensive planning and analysis, Grant Thornton and Nippon Koei India have been appointed to carry out the pre-feasibility study. This includes evaluating technical, financial, and environmental aspects of the airport, with the final report expected in the next 6 to 9 months.
The Vadhavan Airport is not just an aviation project; it’s a strategic catalyst aimed at unlocking the potential of nearby industrial zones like Bhiwandi, supporting the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), and boosting Maharashtra’s competitiveness in global trade.
Designed to handle both passenger and cargo operations, the airport will play a crucial role in decongesting Mumbai’s air traffic while offering seamless connectivity to the upcoming port. This integrated development aligns with India’s broader goals of enhancing infrastructure, improving logistics, and fostering regional development.
